Learning projects

For newcomers to our culture the key to integrating, contributing and belonging is to communicate in English. Ensuring that everyone has the English language skills to thrive here is important work.
Our volunteers deliver informal English conversation classes to recent migrants who are keen to be a part of our communities.

Our Speak English Programme involves informal adult ESOL classes (English for Speakers of Other Languages).

The sessions allow people to practice their English skills, facilitated by volunteers. It is an informal environment which promotes confidence, encourages learning and helps with basic literacy in English.

This role involves using creative learning methods to facilitate learners to develop their English in everyday situations.

Skills and attributes required:

  • Excellent communication skills,

  • An interest in people from different cultures,

  • Good planning and organising skills,

  • Flexibility and ability to use initiative.

Main tasks:

Facilitate sessions with small groups of learners,

Enthuse learners and promote a supportive learning environment,

Share skills and best practice,

Support assistant volunteer facilitators to improve.

We run sessions in several venues across Sheffield.

If want to ease into this role the sessions at St Mary's on Bramall Lane are a good start.

If you are confident of your teaching skills and able to hold a classroom of adult learners on your own, we have satellite sessions which may be more of a challenge but very rewarding.

Please get in touch with us to chat about what you'd like to do.
